Observer Comment: Draft beach byelaws - have your say

THERE has been a fair bit of reaction to last week's front page article on Rother District Council's draft ideas to introduce new byelaws on its shoreline, especially Bexhill beach.

Anglers are especially annoyed at the proposed restrictions, as in general their pastime is somewhat solitary and generally non-offensive to others.

Even though the fish don’t always bite, Bexhill beach is known as a favoured spot for local sea anglers, who also wish to cast their rods out into the waters in the winter months as well as the proposed restrictions from May 1 to September 30.

Horse riding is less of an issue in Bexhill thanks to the stony nature of the beach, however riders have been known to take their horses on an outing along the beach at extreme low tide when the sand flats show.

Keen bait-diggers could also find their activites curtailed, as could those who are keen on kite surfing.

In an ideal world, the beach would be used all year round for such gentle pastimes - tides providing - without annoying others who also wish to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the sea air.

However, most would agree that antisocial use of the beach in any shape or form should not be tolerated.

Rother District Council says it wants to hear from anyone commenting on the draft byelaws - the person to contact is Natasha Fielding at [email protected]
