Ofsted praises Pebsham's School's progress

STAFF at Pebsham Community Primary School were so delighted with their Ofsted report that they awarded head teacher Pat Strickson a "star assembly."

The gas-filled balloons from that memorable occasion were still in her office this week as she told the Observer she wanted to thank the staff for their personal efforts, the governors for their invaluable support and everyone involved with the school.

"What for me is lovely is that the success of the teams at Pebsham School has been recognised by HM Inspectors '“ in the world of education world they are the highest authority!"

Chairman of governors Jeremy Betts said: "The result of our Ofsted inspection, which we are extremely pleased about, is the result of the vision and drive of our head teacher and the commitment and dedication of our entire team.

"I am extremely proud of all of them, as are the whole governing body."

Ofsted marking is divided into four grades. Grade 1 is Outstanding; Grade 2 Good; Grade 3, Satisfactory and Grade 4 Inadequate.

Pebsham has scored Grade 1 for personal development and well-being and curriculum and other activities.

It has scored Grade 2 for overall effectiveness; effectiveness of the foundation stage; achievement and standards; quality of provision; care, guidance and support and leadership and management.

Within these categories, Pebsham has scored 10 Grade One results and only one Grade 3, the remainder being Grade 2.

Four years ago it was rated as Satisfactory. Mrs Strickson was appointed headteacher three years ago.

The Ofsted report says: "This is a good and rapidly improving school. It has some outstanding features. Pupils receive exceptional levels of care and a vibrant and exciting curriculum. As a result, their personal development is exceptional; they behave well and come to love learning.

"The school has developed very good links with parents and pre-school settings.

"Governors have a good understanding of the strategic development of the school and provide both strong support and challenge.

"The outstanding leadership of the headteacher is central to the school's all-round rapid development and ensures that focus on accelerating pupils' achievement is always a priority. The new senior leadership team is developing well and senior leaders work closely together, adding a wealth of experience to the school.

"The school has been transformed in recent years and pupils now learn in a bright and secure environment and feel very safe.

"Pupils feel valued and flourish in the school's strong family atmosphere."

The report adds: "The great majority of parents justifiably hold the school in high regard."

The report suggests two areas for further improvement:

*Raise achievement by making sure teachers consistently use assessment to match work to the learning needs of lower-attaining and more-capable pupils

*Increase opportunities for subject leaders to check the quality of teaching and learning across the school so they have greater impact on raising achievement and standards.
