No name change for windmill

POLEGATE Windmill is still Polegate Windmill.

A suggestion to change the name to Willingdon Windmill was swept away at the AGM of the Eastbourne and District Preservation Trust which manages the mill.

Suggestions had been made that the name should be changed as the ward containing the mill has moved into the parish of Willingdon and Jevington.

Peter Martin explained it was known as Willingdon Windmill when it built in 1817 and changed only in 1939 when Polegate was created.

Chairman of Sussex Mills, Peter Hill, said the name should stay as it is known nationally and internationally.

Changing it would also incur substantial cost with new leaflets, literature, souvenirs, signs.

Clerk of works and trust secretary Lawrence Stevens appealed for more guides. Ring 01323 734496.
