Night at the opera for Bognor Regis care home residents as Covent Garden visits

Opera was on the menu at a Bognor Regis care home when Covent Garden came to the coast.

Arias and scenes by Mozart, Bizet and Strauss were among those performed at St Joseph's Residential Care Home by a quartet of singers.

The Royal Opera House's Glenys Groves (soprano), Scilla Stewart (mezzo), Roy Gregory (baritone) and Luke Price (tenor) form The Garden Party and take opera to different locations.

Residents and staff at the home, in Albert Road, dressed for the occasion in exquisite eveningwear and enjoyed a selection of operatic favourites interspersed by a sumptuous meal.

The appreciative audience '“ in a sea of tulle, sequins and taffeta '“ looked their glamorous best and enjoyed a menu which included stuffed salmon en croute served warm with caprese salad with vine tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and pesto dressing, fine wines and chocolate truffles.

Mary Breslin, the home's care manager, said: "With proceedings continuing well into the night, everyone agreed the event to have been most enjoyable, bringing back a flood of memories.

"As part of St Joseph's ongoing enrichment programme for its residents, it certainly was a case of 'if music be the food of love, play on', with both the singers and residents reluctantly taking leave of each other."
