Newcomers Add To Success

EIGHT new exhibitors have helped to make this year's Angmering Society art display, in the village library, one of the most successful in its history.

Their work is among 44 paintings and drawings which went on view on Monday, in an exhibition continuing until May 7.

A striking portrait in charcoal, pastels and graphite of her father, by art teacher Margaret Appa, one of the "newcomers", although she has lived in the village for 13 years, catches the eye as visitors enter the exhibition.

Each of the 22 artists in the show either lives or works in Angmering, or is a member of the Angmering Society.

Several village scenes feature in the display, such as High Street, Ham Manor, the village hall and The Square.

Muriel Cox, however, casts her net further afield, with watercolours of a scene in Cambodia, and of Afghan children enjoying a makeshift shower.

The wide range of subjects also includes still life, animals and other landscapes, and around half of the pictures are for sale.

Two pen and ink pictures of the Bolshoi Ballet by Juliet Pannell, renowned for her portraits of Prime Ministers and the Queen, are displayed.

Exhibition times are the same as the library opening hours it is closed all day Wednesday and Friday.
