More than 250 teachers in seafront strike rally

MORE than 250 teachers gathered at Worthing's Pavilion Theatre on Thursday morning as part of a one-day national strike.

The action was called by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in response to the Government's decision to increase teachers' pay by just 2.45 per cent, below the rate of inflation.

Teachers at the rally said it was effectively a pay cut when the cost of living was on the increase.

Des McDonald, who teaches at Littlehampton Community School, said: "We are taking action very reluctantly because teachers' pay is not keeping pace with inflation.

"I'm afraid it's very hard to recruit and retain good teachers and so we have been forced to take this action."
