His father, Alex Wasiek, and his stepmother, Elizabeth Ann Wasiek, of North Bersted Street in North Bersted, made the sad journey to visit the spot on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Wasiek said: "Rick was a private person and a free spirit.

"He built a plane at one time.

"He had a private school education.

"My husband is in civil engineering and Rick worked with him in London for a while but Rick never liked to be in an office.

"He did courier work on a motorcycle for a while until he had a little accident and went to work at Heathrow Airport fuelling planes for an airline.

"But he was made redundant three months ago and moved across to Alitalia to be a baggage handler.

"He was hoping to work his way up from there."

Mr Wasiek had been briefly married and had no children. He moved to Bognor about seven or eight years ago and was on his way home from Heathrow when his fatal accident took place. No other vehicles were involved.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Peddar.
