London-Hastings event attracts more than 1,000 charity riders

More than 1,000 cyclists helped raise thousands of pounds for a heart charity on Sunday by taking part in a bike ride from London to Hastings.

Despite the breezy and overcast weather, participants took to the saddle and tackled the challenging 61-mile route from Crystal Palace, through the North Downs and High Weald and down towards Hastings.

The fundraiser was organised by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Cyclists of all abilities took on the route that saw the first riders crossing the finishing line just after 12 noon and the last riders finishing towards 8pm.

Organisers hope the event has raised more than 50,000 to help the charity fight the UK's single biggest killer, heart and circulatory disease.

Hastings MP Amber Rudd said: "Well done to Martin Mears of St Leonards who organised this excellent fundraiser for the BHF.

"On a very windy morning I was delighted to welcome the first rider into Grosvenor Gardens who achieved his record breaking ride in only four hours and 20 minutes. It was a successful and enjoyable event."

Rob Cox, the BHF's regional events organiser, said: "We are extremely grateful to everyone who got involved in the event. It was a tough ride but people were enjoying the challenge and glad to have taken part.

"Thank you to our volunteers and to all the families who braved the windy weather on the seafront to cheer on their loved ones.

"There was a great atmosphere and we are looking forward to being part of the event next year."

First across the line was Tim O'Donnell followed by Mark McGinley.
