Liz has a growing reputation at Bognor town show

The home-made tasty relish earned Mrs Pollington a first prize in the event's pickle-in-a-jar category to repeat her triumph at last year's inaugural show.

Mrs Pollington (75), of King George's Court in Sandringham Way, also received recognition for her home-made marmalade, her oxalis pot plant and the beans, shallots and potatoes she has grown on her Gravits Lane allotment.

She said: "I've got two allotments and I've been growing my own produce for 38 years. We've never had a show like this before in Bognor until last year.

"There's something for everyone. Anyone can make a cake if they want. It's lovely being at the show.

"You meet so many people and you can get ideas from the things you see here.

"From those, you can make Christmas gifts and presents instead of buying things. It's surprising what you can make."

Mrs Pollington was among 28 entrants in the show at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

Many of those individuals had put in multiple entries which ranged from fruit and vegetables to home baking.

Bognor Regis Horticultural Society president Norman Page, who judged those categories, said: "It's been quite difficult because we have seen some really good entries. There may not be many of them but what we have are good."

The show was staged by the Bognor Community Action Network with the society. It also featured a children's card design competition as well as a table-top sale and other activities for children.

Carol Fullick, of the network, said: "It's all about giving local people the opportunity to show what they can achieve '“ whether it's allotment-grown, home-grown, something they have made or something they have cooked.

"Events like this promote community cohesion by getting as many people as possible to join in."

Also present at show were organisations such as the Arun Neighbourhood Network.

This links groups that provide services and activities for older people by enabling them to meet regularly, share information and discuss issues.
