Learning sign language and lipreading

Sign Language and Lipreading classes will be held by East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre in its Deaf Outreach Service bus this autumn.

The sessions will be held will start from September 17 to November 19 in various venues around the region.

The East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre is a charity based in Eastbourne and covers the whole of East Sussex.

The bus is an ex-Youth Work Service vehicle that has been converted for use as a classroom. Co-ordinator Mary Saunders said: "This is an exciting and first-time innovative project for people in the rural areas and towns of East Sussex and is aimed at deaf, hard of hearing (Lipreading) and deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people (Sign Language).

"The project is hoping to bring local and handy services enjoyed by the big coastal towns out to the more rural areas of the County thereby helping to reduce car travel, pollution and time. If the venture is well supported we hope to continue this and possibly other services for deaf and hard of hearing people in these areas."

The project starts on Wednesday September 17 2008 and finishes 10 weeks later; the programme is as follows:

Robertsbridge (using Robertsbridge Village Hall) Introduction to Sign Language 10am - 11am Northiam (on the bus) Lipreading Class in Northiam Village Hall Car Park 10am - 11am Battle (on the bus) Introduction to Sign Language in Upper Market Coach Park, Market Road 12.15 - 1.15pm Herstmonceux (on the bus) Lipreading Class in Herstmonceux Village Hall Car Park 2pm - 3pm

Space on the bus is limited so please enrol early.

Cost will be 10 for the 10-week course.
