Lagness pub has best back garden

Everything in the garden is lovely for prize-winning Lagness pub licencees Ken and Linda Hannam.

The couple who run The Royal Oak have won the award for the best back garden among the more than 360 pubs owned by Fullers Brewery across southern England.

They were also highly commended for their front of house display along Pagham Road. The successes delighted the couple who had only entered the competition for the first time at the insistence of their area manager. They received a 75 voucher and a plaque to recognise their efforts.

Mr Hannam, who took over the pub in October 1998, said: "A lot of people comment on our displays. The back garden is a lovely area for families to eat outside in. A lot of hard work has gone into getting it to look nice."

Among the flowers which contributed to their successes were busy lizzies, begonias, clematis, geraniums as well as herbs and flowering shrubs.

The recognition has been especially valued after the poor summer weather.

"Our front of house took a real battering in the bad weather, but I suppose everybody else's did as well," he added.
