Keeping tradition alive at Winchelsea

THERE will be good natured madness and mayhem in Winchelsea on Boxing Day when the traditional street game of Kicking the Frenchman’s Head takes place.

The event has been enacted in Castle Street for well over a decade now and is recognised as a traditional English custom.

It is described by the locals as a cross between football and rugby, the game has no rules other than getting the Frenchman’s head into a barrel goal.

The fun is set to start at around 11am, involves three teams and lasts for around an hour.

Teams then retire to the New inn to celebrate or lick their wounds.
