Hell's corner just got worse

IF you think Worthing's A27 congestion problem is bad enough now, then prepare for a nightmare after Christmas.

Work is due to start early in January on installing traffic lights at the Grove Lodge roundabout '“ a pivotal junction which handles both A27 and A24 traffic.

Expect weeks of further delays while the work is being carried out, but don't bet on an improvement in the A27 traffic flow once the SIX new sets of lights are in operation at the junction.

Despite assurances from government agencies and the county council that this measure will reduce congestion, there are real fears of even more horrendous tailbacks once the lights are in use, plus the likelihood of "rat running" in residential roads by drivers desperate to avoid being trapped in long queues.

The Grove Lodge lights are part of a 9 million package to ease traffic congestion on the A27 in Worthing and Lancing.

This "improvement" scheme was originally announced back in 2001, BEFORE Transport Secretary Alistair Darling rejected schemes for Worthing and Arundel bypasses.
