Have a say on how to combat flooding near the Arun

People concerned about flooding in and around the River Arun are being urged to speak out about future plans to lower the risks of it bursting its banks.

The Environment Agency is encouraging residents and landowners to find out more about the long-term plans to manage the risk of flooding from the tidal River Arun.

The Lower Tidal River Arun Strategy covers the areas of Littlehampton on the east bank of the river, and Ford on the west bank.

It also includes Arundel, Angmering and parts of Pulborough.

There are currently 76 properties at risk of flooding from the River Arun.

However, it is estimated this could rise to more than 800 homes over the next 100 years due to climate change if nothing is done to manage the risk.

The Environment Agency is urging local communities to have their say on the draft recommendations before March 15, 2013 as their input is vital on how best to manage the long-term risks.

The first public exhibition will take place at Pulborough Village Hall, on Saturday, January 12, between 11am and 6pm, with a second planned at Arundel Town Hall, on Tuesday, February 12, from 1-8pm.

Andrew Gilham, Environment Agency flood and coastal risk manager, said: “We recognise that the best way to manage flood risk within the Arun valley is through a partnership between the local community and public bodies.

This is the next stage in developing that long term relationship.

There are many ways to view the draft recommendations and comment on them including an online consultation on the Environment Agency’s website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/lowertidalriverarun
