GCSE exam joy in Battle

Claverham Community College and Robertsbridge Community College both saw 70 per cent of students gaining five or more A*-C grades, with the latter enjoying its third consecutive year of improved results.

And at Battle Abbey School a staggering 98 per of students achieved at least five A and A* grades, with nearly half taking home all A and A* grades.

Roger Clark, headmaster at Battle Abbey School, said: "We are pleased to announce our GCSE pupils have once again excelled themselves.

"In total 98 per cent of our pupils achieved at least five A and A* grades, with a very pleasing 47 per cent of all grades awarded being A and A*.

"Particular mention should go to Richard Wood, Oscar Rogers, Holly Adams, Alexandra Byrne, Kelly Spearpoint, Eleanor Underhill, Jordan Dowdall, Georgia Webb, Sam Bunday and Oliver Slacke, who all achieved nine or more A and A* grades."

Milton Beech and Amy Waters were the top performers at Robertsbridge Community College, achieving all A* or A grades.

Students at the college are celebrating a third year of improved GCSE exam results, with a record 70 per cent achieving five A*-C passes.

The number of students achieving five A*-C grades, including English and maths, increased by four per cent to 56 per cent and the number of students achieving A* and A grades increased by a further two per cent on last year.

Robertsbridge headteacher Karen Roberts said: "Once again the high aspirations, determination and hard work of students have paid dividends. They totally deserve their success!"

Over at Claverham, 70 per cent of students took home five or more A*-C grades, with 66 per cent gaining five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths.

Headteacher Paul Swatton said: "I am very pleased with this promising set of GCSE results.

"This excellent level of achievement is a product of the hard work of the students, the commitment and dedication of the staff and the support of the parents and governors at the college.

"Well done to all of our Year 11 students."

Across all 27 state secondary schools in East Sussex, 55 per cent of students gained five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths – a four per cent increase on the previous best last year.

Councillor Keith Glazier, East Sussex County Council's lead member for children's and adult services, praised all involved.

He said: "I would like to congratulate everyone whose hard work has contributed to these excellent results.

"They are, once again, a tribute to the dedication and commitment of students and their teachers.

"I am delighted to see so many successes and also extremely pleased to see yet another year of overall improvement for the county.

"We are not complacent, however, and will continue to work hard to drive standards still higher."

* Robertsbridge Community College is currently pursuing alleged discrepancies in its GCSE results with the examination boards.

The college says it anticipates the final figures may be higher than those published.
