Former councillor dies in Australia

A FORMER Nutley resident and councillor who served on several Wealden Council committees died in Sydney, Australia, on Good Friday.

Richard Everard Morig Hunter, represented Maresfield on the district council from May 1983 to May 1991.

He was deputy chairman of the housing committee from 1987 to 1989 and deputy chairman of the plans north sub-committee from 1985 to 1987.

Mr Hunter emigrated to Australia in 1993 to be closer to his son, Richard and his family.

He is survived by his widow Molly, their son Rick, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Their daughter Grace pre-deceased him.

Mr Hunter studied at Leeds Technical College and later Coventry Tech where he trained as an electrical engineer.

He became a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

He worked with Insurance Engineers, Bristol, before joining the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting from 1957 until he retired in 1983.

He served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during WWII, and was a Dunkirk veteran.

After the war, he remained in the Army Emergency Reserve and retired with the rank of major.

He was awarded the Emergency Reserve Decoration.

He was a JP on the Uckfield bench for 25 years.
