Flag of St George flying high in Bognor

Red and white dominated the ground floor of a Bognor Regis home as its residents joined in their first community event.

Some 40 residents in coloured bowler hats enjoyed the fun of a St George's Day street party at Elizabeth House.

The lunchtime event today (Thursday, April 23) saw them indulge in a St George Cross flag waving singalong of songs from the past as well as games. A buffet produced by the home's award-winning chef, Eric Homer, was washed down by shandy and lemonade.

The activity was the first of its kind since the former residents of King's Haven, who have dementia, moved into the home in Victoria Drive.

One of them, Val Webb, 76, said: "The street party is a marvellous idea, so much hard work has gone into it. It brings everyone together."

The fun reminded her of the street parties she enjoyed in her younger years living in Copnor in Portsmouth.

Derek Easthope - whose wife Sheila, 77, was at King's Haven for just over two years - said: "I try to support the activities at the home.

"The funds they raise through things like the tombola go to pay for activities such as outings."

The party took place in 'The Street' just inside the home's entrance and decorated with patriotic bunting and flags.

Alison Hayes, the home's activities co-ordinator, said: "We thought St George's Day would be a great opportunity for us to get together with the residents and their relatives.

"We have been so busy settling down since we moved in just over a month ago.

"Having an event like this makes for more of a community in the home rather than the residents sitting in rooms. The staff can get involved as well."
