West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said crews were called at 8.03pm last night (Monday 29 June) to reports of a large stable containing tools and agricultural machinery well alight off Furners Lane in Henfield.

A spokesman added: “Crews from Henfield and Partridge Green were mobilised to the scene with a third appliance mobilised shortly afterwards as further calls were received stating the fire was spreading to nearby ISO containers.

“On arrival, the initial incident commander from Henfield was confronted with a fire involving a stable measuring and two ISO containers and requested an additional two appliances and a water carrier.”

The crews worked hard to stop the fire spreading to further out buildings and extinguished the fire using three jets and two hose reels, with 12 sets of breathing apparatus used, he added.

The spokesman said: “To protect a nearby stream, crews also constructed an improvised environmental dam so that firefighting water was contained and did not enter the watercourse.”
