Any move to sell playing fields is always controversial even if the funds help to enhance educational facilities.

The college, which announced last year that it was reducing its staff to help pay off a forecast deficit of £6.5 million, has confirmed that it is considering the sale of some of its land.

A spokesman for the college told the Middy: “The college is in early discussion with various potentially interested parties regarding the sale of eight acres of land in Haywards Heath.

“The conversations the college has been involved in are at a very early stage and we would be keen to supply more information when there is more detail to share.

“The college is proud of its educational role in the community and will want to ensure that that role is enhanced should the sale of any land proceed.”
