Unemptied bins in Storrington close anger residents

Residents in Storrington say they are being ‘fobbed off’ by the council after their rubbish was left uncollected for nearly two weeks.

Nikki and Darren Turner and their neighbours in Hillside Walk had bin bags piling up last week after they were told the Horsham District Council bin lorry driver ‘was new and did not where he was going’.

Mrs Turner said: “They didn’t come last Friday so the last collection was the Friday before.

“On Monday they said they were going to send someone out, but they didn’t.”

“We have four or five bags. I was told ‘that number of bags is over your quota. If you have excess bags, we shouldn’t really collect them’.

“What makes me angry even more is that our blue topped bins were collected.”

She said it was not the first time the bin collection had been missed.

“I’m paying council tax and then they are expecting people to pay £29 for the (brown lidded) bin to be collected.

“I said to them, ‘you can’t even pick up this normal waste so what’s the guarantee that you will pick up the garden waste?’.

“They said it was a new driver and he didn’t know where he was going. They keep promising to come out. I just keep getting fobbed off.”

Finally on Wednesday - 12 days after their last collection and only after Mrs Turner told the council she was contacting the County Times - a lorry came to collect the bins which had piled up.

A spokesman from Horsham District Council said: “Horsham District Council is sorry that operational difficulties prevented staff from collecting the residual waste on the scheduled day.

“The bins from this property have now been cleared, including any additional bags.

“If staff do encounter operational difficulties which prevent them from collecting waste, they will pick up additional rubbish when they catch up and the council is sorry if a resident was given incorrect information.”
