On Thursday, judges Mick Gore and Brian Jeffries were shown examples of sustainable planting, award-winning toilets and recycling efforts as the community worked together to improve the environment.

Alison Cooper, chairman of Rustington Parish Council, said: “The day went really well. The village always looks fantastic so we’ll be happy whatever happens. We do have a strong history of doing well though, so I am hopeful that we will win.”

The day saw presentations from the chairman of the In Bloom committee and a representative from the Oak Community Project, which focuses on supporting people with learning difficulties.

The newest installation for this year’s competition was a floral display in the shape of a birthday cake, with flickering candle-style lights that glow in the dark, to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Andy Cooper, member of Rustington Chamber of Trade and business owner, said: “The village looked stunning and the visitors and residents love the floral displays. Businesses know how important entering South and Southeast In Bloom is for Rustington’s profile.

“The village is known for its flowerbeds and stunning displays so fingers a crossed for yet another good result.”
