End of an era as family centre closes down

A SUPPORT centre for families at the heart of the Bexhill community has closed down.

After 23 years of service to Bexhill, The Tall Trees Family Centre, Turkey Road, laid on a farewell lunch on Thursday, March 26.

A replacement service run by East Sussex County Council (ESCC) began work on Wednesday.

Tall Trees was operated by Action for Children, previously known as the National Children's Home.

Suzanne Cornford, Action for Children's project manager for Tall Trees Family Centre said: "Tall Trees has been a huge part of the community for more than two decades, so there's no doubt that its closure marks the end of an era for the area.

"Our promise to the children and families who used the centre was always that we would offer whatever support we could for as long as they needed it. It's been a pleasure to have been there for them and to see the positive difference the centre has made to their lives.

"I'd like to make it clear this is no comment on the excellent quality of work done by Tall Trees."

The closure is due to a combination of financial and organisational circumstances within the county council.

Working with ESCC, Tall Trees offered support and activities to young people and carers in Bexhill and the surrounding area.

Two rural workers assisted families from surrounding villages as far as Camber and Ticehurst.

The support has ranged from advising parents on general parenting skills and relationship-building, to providing assessments for court.

In addition, the centre's staff worked closely with hundreds of children and young people, including offering one-to-one assistance for those taken into care and support in cases of bullying or domestic abuse.

Another of Tall Trees' most successful services has been a work group for grandparents caring for their children's children.

One attendee, known as Wendy, said: "We have had nothing but positive support from Tall Trees. The team always follows through with their plans and there is always someone available when needed.

"The support we received from the group was wonderful and it allowed us to relax, share our worries and help each other. It has been lovely to be made welcome with a cup of tea or coffee and have someone caring for us for a little while!"

In January, the Observer supported its campaign to raise awareness of private fostering.

As a result of their work, private fostering figures were raised by 400 per cent.

Describing their Tall Trees project worker, one private foster-carer said: "She was non-intrusive, caring and considerate. Her care and concern for the children has been noted by them."

The Family Support Plus Service will continue to advise local young people and carers involved in private fostering assessments, as well as providing support in cases where a Residence Order is in place.
