Dramatic river rescue sees Angmering pensioner saved

Emergency services rescued a pensioner from the cold waters of the River Arun, this afternoon (Wednesday, December 12).

At 12.40pm police and volunteer crews from the RNLI were called to Rope Walk after a report that a man had been seen to walk into the river from steps leading off the road.

Following a swift search involving RNLI crews, police and a search-and-rescue helicopter, a 70-year old Angmering man was found alive in the river nearby by the RNLI Littlehampton, in Fishermans Quay.

The man was taken to the lifeboat station shortly after 1pm where he was treated by paramedics.

Further details including his background and current condition, and the reason for his entering the water, have yet to be established, a police spokeswoman said.
