Dog rescue fails

BEXHILL friends Catherine Salvage and Anita Turner have reluctantly abandoned their bid to have a half-blind, stray dog they named Scampi brought to Britain from the Greek holiday island of Rhodes.

While staying at an hotel there earlier this year the pair were so touched by Scampi’s plight, foraging for food and sleeping rough, that they set up a rescue fund.

But this week Catherine, a psychiatric nurse, said: “Sadly, we’ve had to accept that Scampi has moved on or died. The hotel closed for the season some weeks ago and although we’ve kept in touch with the gardener there and the Greek authorities, Scampi has not been seen again.”

Generous Bexhillians have donated a total of £220 towards saving Scampi, and Catherine said: “Their support has been brilliant. No one has asked for their money back, so we’re going to make up the amount to £300 and donate it to the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary here at home.”

Barby had herself offered to pay for Scampi’s health care, using her own vet, had he been brought back to the UK and once clear of quarantine.
