Daredevil divers put lives at risk

TEENAGERS in Lewes have been putting their lives at risk by jumping from the Phoenix Causeway into the Ouse and drifting inland to the banks of the nearby industrial estate.

At least three were spotted on Wednesday afternoon in sweltering weather.

One passer-by said: 'The tide was high and coming in but it was still a dangerous thing to do.

'There could have been obstacles, such as shopping trolleys under the water and it's about a 25ft from the bridge to the water.

'The boys were wearing trunks and shorts so, presumably, their clothing was on the banks of the river.'

A police spokesman said: 'We were called by concerned members of the public at 1pm but by the time we got there the youths had gone.

'We know it's a tempting thing to do in this weather, but we would advise against it.'
