Yapton Parish Council (YPC) said this evening (Monday, May 11) that its appointed bailiffs and legal representatives are still working to remove the travellers, who arrived at King George V Playing Field on Main Road last Sunday.

This comes despite a 'notice to quit' being served on the travellers on Friday, which required them to leave the site by 10am today. YPC, which owns the land, said on Friday that the travellers 'indicated that they will leave on Sunday evening'.

However, posting on its Twitter page today, a parish council spokesperson said: "Our appointed bailiffs and legal representatives are taking all steps possible to seek an appropriate remedy to remove the travellers from the site as quickly as possible."

Sussex Police was called, when the travellers first arrived, and conducted regular patrols. Since then, further caravans have arrived at the site.

In a message to residents last week, YPC wrote: "Needless to say, the advice to local residents is always not to approach a group of travellers or get involved in a debate or argument with them or to take any 'direct action'; please always leave all contact with the group to the relevant authorities.

"It is even more important in the current circumstances and where social-distancing is paramount, as approaching any groups of people not only puts themselves but also the travellers at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

"This advice also applies to people using the playing field who should keep well away from the area where the vehicles are parked."
