Three Horsham district drivers charged with drink-driving

Three drivers from the Horsham district have been charged with drink-related driving offences in the last week.

Alexander Aston, 22, was arrested after his car was seen being driven the wrong way down the A27 westwards towards Emsworth shortly after midnight on Friday (June 6).

A Sussex Police spokesperson said the Volkswagen Polo hit a lorry before it was abandoned in the outside lane of the dual carriageway at the BP garage in Emsworth and the driver fled.

Officers had to move the car in darkness out of the dual carriageway to prevent it being hit by oncoming traffic.

Aston, of Red Deer Close, Horsham, was later charged with drink-driving and dangerous driving and released on bail to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on September 16.

Andrew Coakley, 49, was arrested at 7.30pm on Friday after he was seen driving erratically on the A272 in Billingshurst.

Coakley, of Billingshurst Road, Horsham, was charged with drink-driving and released on bail to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on June 25.

Thomas Denman, 20, was arrested at 10.10am on Sunday (June 8) after his car was stopped at a speed check in Lewes Road, Cross in Hand.

Denman, of Hurston Lane, Storrington, was charged with drink-driving and released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on July 24.

Sussex Police is running Operation Dragonfly to try to tackle drink and drug-related driving across the county this month.
