9. Tara Perry, Hastings
Tara Perry, 33, of Priory Road in Hastings, was jailed for six years and three months after robbing a local man in a mobility scooter who had tried to help her. On August 10 last year, Perry approached the 57-year-old man in Church Road and he agreed to give her a lift on his scooter to the police station, Warrior Square railway station, probation offices and Waldegrave Street, where she demanded money, threw him off his scooter and stole £380 of cash. On January 15, she pleaded guilty to robbery and was jailed for six years and three months, two years of which to be served on licence.
10. Christina Whelan, Brighton
Thirty-four-year-old Christina Whelan was jailed for assaulting two police officers and a paramedic in Brighton. Whelan, of Danehill Road in Brighton, was behaving aggressively towards staff at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on January 12 and, when police intervened, one was struck and one was spat at by her, while she claimed to have Covid-19. She continued to shout abusive language and also assaulted a member of security staff at the hospital. Whelan pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting an emergency worker, assault by beating, obstructing a constable in their execution of duty and using threatening / abusive words or behaviour likely to cause alarm or distress on January 14. She was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison.
11. Jonathan Turner, Chichester
After being challenged by a member of Marks and Spencer staff in Chichester's East Street store on December 15, Jonathan Turner smashed a £2.50 jar of truffle mayonnaise on the floor which he subsequently slipped in. Turner, who was asked to leave for being drunk, then hit a male member of staff in the face and left. He was arrested shortly after and charged with criminal damage and assault. Turner, of Duncan Road in Chichester, pleaded guilty to both offences and was ordered to pay £2.50 compensation to M&S and £75 compensation to the staff member. While at court, a separate issue of Turner burgling One Stop in Chichester in August was dealt with. He was sentenced to 12 weeks after pleading guilty but, as he had breached an ongoing 12-week sentence, he was jailed for 24 weeks.
