Couple crusade against 'intrusive' beach huts

A CRUSADING Bexhill couple hope to initiate a campaign to prevent beach huts "ruining views of the seafront," from being put up.

William and Margaret Rendall are sick of the sight of huts along the beach and "want to send a message out to like - minded individuals" to protest against the structures they say are blocking the seaview.

The couple contest the problem has become worse over the years and point to a number of new huts that have gone up in recent months.

"Surely something can be done," said Mr Rendall of Cantelupe Road. "We need to get all the people we can together and take this to the town hall and make them see they can't make these decisions."

"If you go to Galley Hill and further along, it is blocked with these beach huts. They effectively block out the sea and the view is spoiled. People may say 'what do we care?' but we walk along the seafront and have done for the last 20 years."

Mrs Rendall said: "Everybody loves Bexhill because it's different to Hastings or Eastbourne, but it's not going to be if it keeps becoming commercialised. There's money in the beach huts"

Owners of huts rent a portion of beach from Rother District council on which to build the structures and are under an obligation to keep them well maintained.

As octogenarians, the Rendalls have no wish to become campaign organisers, but hope to raise the issue and encourage Bexhill residents to fight the building of any more huts - possibly through the formation of a protest group.

Mr Rendall added: "We want to send a message out to like - minded individuals, the people who care about and appreciate Bexhill.
