Cotton-topped tamarin baby - it's you

How cute is that?

There will be much ooh-ing and aah-ing at Drusilla's Park in Alfriston when visitors catch sight of baby Cotton-topped Tamarin twins.

The two tiny bundles of fur were born in mid-March and are doing well under the guidance of proud parents, John and Georgie.

Like many primates, cotton-topped tamarins are an endangered species. They are native to the humid tropical forests of Columbia in South America, where it is feared that there is now a population of less than 2,500 left in the wild.

Mum, Georgie was born at the Park in 2002 while John arrived in 2006 from Dudley Zoo. The couple were introduced at Drusillas as part of a European Breeding Programme, making the recent deliveries even more special.

Both parents play a role in caring for the young but it is usually the male who carries the babies, before giving them back to the female for nursing. If there are older siblings in the family, the brothers and sisters will also help out. However, it shouldn't be too long before these cotton buddies start to explore their new surroundings for themselves.
