Catsfield

Catsfield residents are sad at the loss of one of a pair of old English oaks on The Green, almost opposite the Post Office in the strong winds on Wednesday night. It had become very unstable and was riddled with fungus. It had a circumference of 277cm at 1.5m from the ground, which makes it about 290 years old. That means that it had been there since about 1723! It is hoped that maybe it will be replaced with another oak by the Parish Council.

Don’t forget that the next fundraising event for the parish church of St Laurence will be tomorrow, Saturday 9th February. Do come along and enjoy a fun-filled evening in the Village Hall at the Family Bingo Night, to start at 7 pm. Refreshments will be available and there will be a raffle. Tickets cost £6 for six games and will be on sale at the door.

The annual ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’ will be on Friday 1st March at 2.30pm at St Laurence Church. These are always very special services, when more than three million people from all around the world will be worshipping together in an interdenominational day of prayer, using a form of service prepared especially by the Christian women in France. Come and be a part of this international event entitled ‘’I was a stranger and you welcomed me’. All are very welcome to stay for refreshments afterwards.

The second Catsfield Village Social Club evening will be on Tuesday 12th February from 7pm in the Village Hall, the cost is £2 to include refreshments. There will be good company and the opportunity to join in board and card games, table tennis, wii, scrabble if you wish or just sit and chat. For further details phone Janet on 892139.

Needless to say there has been no football this week, the boys are getting restless and will be raring to go this Saturday when they attempt to play Crowhurst away. Anyone who travels through Crowhurst knows that it is equally wet there, so we could be in for another disappointment.

This is a call for any ‘crafty’ people who would be interested in a craft afternoon once a month in the Village Hall. This is intended to be an informal fun afternoon with other crafters, allowing you to spend time on your own craft and be inspired by others. I know we are all suffering from potholes in the road, but to drive along Watermill and Potman’s Lanes is like rallying and to attempt either of these roads during the rush hours becomes extremely perilous.

Local farmers are inspecting the crops that have already gone in with increasing alarm and are now waiting for the ground to dry up to see whether the spring crops can be started. Everything seems to be on hold in the countryside.
