Call for more trains for Bognor Regis

More train services are needed for Bognor Regis, the county council's leader has urged.

Cllr Henry Smith used the local authority's response to the consultation over a new rail franchise for the London to Sussex area to urge the introduction of improved services to the town.

He said: "We would strongly encourage that Bognor be included as part of the Thameslink network, as this is a key visitor destination within West Sussex."

Boosting rail links with direct services from north of London would assist in Bognor's regeneration, Cllr Smith stated.

His comments were sent to the Department for Transport to be considered before rail operators are invited to tender for the new south central franchise to start from September 2009.

Bognor was included in the original plans to extend Thameslink in the mid-1990s, but the latest proposals show the services after 2012 stopping at Horsham to the north and Littlehampton to the east.
