BURNER PROTEST TAKES TO STREETS

HUNDREDS of people turned out to protest against the proposed incinerator at Newhaven on Saturday.

The rally was organised by Sara Jane Glendinning, a mature student from Seaford who is passionately opposed to the burner, currently in the planning stages but due to be decided later this year.

Newhaven's MP Norman Baker attended as well as town Mayor Cllr Rod Main. Ms Glendinning was full of praise for the police who, she said, were very supportive and to those who turned out for the rally which included lots of children.

East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and Brighton and Hove City Council (B&HCC) have adopted a combined plan to deal with waste from East Sussex.

It calls for the building of an incinerator by waste company Veolia in Newhaven, a proposal that has caused huge controversy.

The rally around the one-way system kicked off with a fake divorce and wedding ceremony during which Sara Jane, who was

dressed as Bride ESCC, divorced Sian Bishop who was dressed as Groom B&HCC.

Sara Jane said: 'After the divorce, I married Fresh Air for a positive future. We had a "vicar" who was asking us why we were divorcing so I gave reasons against the incinerator.

'The most important thing for this campaign is to keep active. The only way we can stop it is by the public getting involved. People need to be consistently aware.

'We do not want to burn rubbish; it is such a negative thing to do to our environment. There are such positive things happening in other places. I was on the train back from London and read that they are going to think about running London buses on recycled rubbish. That is what we should be doing.'
