Brother and sister clinch top places

Alex (8) was judged to have the winning entry at 186cm high in the competition on the Trees estate.

His flower was just one centimetre taller than ten-year-old Sian's.

She was unfortunate because her plant's enormous sunflower head had drooped over in the high winds last week. Without that, her sunflower would have been 35cm taller than her brother's.

It looks the tallest in the photograph because it has been propped up.

In third place, was Cameron Heaton (13) whose plant managed 162cm in his grandparents' garden on the estate.

They were the only three plants to survive the ravages of the terrible summer weather.

The competition was launched by the Trees Estate Residents' Association in April. It was entered by 24 children.

Several requested replacement seeds because the originals had been affected by the weather's extremes but few were able to last the months.

The association's chairwoman, Gez Watson, said the miserable conditions would stop another competition being held. "With such enthusiasm shown by the estate's children in wanting to grow things, we will be holding another competition next year," she explained.

"This will possibly be miniature gardens which will enable the children living in the many flats and maisonettes a chance to shine as potential gardeners."
