In the May edition of the Parish Magazine, which costs only 30p you will find more information about the coming month and advertisements for local trades. It is available from the Broad Oak General Store and the Broad Oak Bakery. The funds for the repairs for St George’s Church Clock Tower have nearly been completed; however, Andrew Burchett, the Tower Captain has informed me that they hope to shortly request the go ahead to Gillet & Johnston (the firm that originally made the clock) for the repairs to be carried out in the hope that it will be working in time for the Flower Festival. They still need to raise approximately £1,000 and would be most grateful if anyone wishes to make a donation, and requests that everyone watches out for further fundraising events. Friday 10May 10 The Farmers’ Market will be open from 10am –12noon I was surprised to see so many different stalls last week so if you have not ventured into Brede Hall for the market do go along and browse, buy, then stay for a coffee and chat. At 7.30pm you will find the short mat bowlers in the Hall, they will be pleased for new comers to join in.

Sunday May 12 9.30am Sung Eucharist at St George’s Brede followed by coffee in the church. Mrs Gillian Lambourne is the preacher at Trinity Methodist Church in Broad Oak at 10.30am The Cricketers hopefully will be in action at 2pm against Beckley in the Recreation Ground lets hope it has dried out. The blue sky and sunshine are lovely but it would be better if the wind dropped or turned southerly, the latest cold mornings have ruined the otherwise beautiful Camellias. We have noticed how colourful and abundant the flowers are and wondered if they liked the extra cold weather we had previously.

Monday May 13 Age UK opens its doors at 10.30am. After lunch the entertainment will be Pam’s games. Next week Marco the magician will entertain and Maureen says anyone is welcome to join them at 1.30pm. Tea and cakes will be served after the performance.

Tuesday May 14 Painting for Pleasure begins at 9.30am and in the afternoon the WI craft group meet at 2.30pm in a members home.

Thursday 16 May 9.30am the trainers will be on for Stretch and Tone in the Village Hall

Friday May 17 Farmers Market opens at 10am–12 noon. Post office service are open 11am – 1pm, please support it. The short mat bowlers will be in action at 7.30pm.

School Report: Our congratulations go to the Barrington-Peak family on the birth of baby Iris. Over the coming weeks we shall also be welcoming several new families to our community following an unprecedented number of requests for places across the school.

Alice Sheppard, Class Three, has named Hetty’s companion “Ivy” following success in the draw.

Pupil progress is continuing to look good across the school following our review meetings this week. A number of pupils have been entered for the Level Six SATs paper in addition to the normal SATs tests held for Year Six pupils. Our whole school attendance figure is currently 95.6 per cent which puts us just below our Local Authority target of 96 per cent.

Please remember children need to be collected from after school clubs via the side door by the kitchen.

The Rainbow Trout has new landlords. Tina and Paul and their family who have taken over running the pub have sent me some news, they wrote; “We hope to have everything completed over the next few weeks. We are going to be sending out an invitation to the local residents to come in and meet us, talk to us about our plans and give them a chance to let us know what they would like from the pub. We are looking to do this on Friday May 17 from 4pm with a free buffet at 6pm.” They are hoping as many people as possible can join them on this occasion.

I am repeating some of what I wrote last week Unfortunately last week’s village voice was not printed, I am sorry to all groups who needed to be advertised. There must have been a glitch in the system.

As most groups were closed for bank holiday the usual groups for the rest of the week met including the following two.

Wednesday May 8 the WI met at 2pm it was a Resolutions meeting and the speaker Sheila Matthews talked about ‘Best Foot Forward’. May 9, at 7.30pm Friendly Circle met and Sheila Richardson subject was How I Started Sewing. Both groups would like to see some younger members so if anyone feels like an afternoon or evening out do go along next month.

On St George’s Day David my husband and I heard the first cuckoo and with the glorious sunshine and blue sky we wondered if spring had come at last. In the evening St George’s Church Patronal Festival began with a Eucharist celebrating St George the Patron Saint of England, Scouts and the Church in Brede. It was followed by a supper of beef and ale casserole, baked Potatoes, green Beans & Carrots and many puddings. Many thanks go to everyone who did what they could to make such a good social evening.

Despite Stagecoach stopping near to Sainsbury’s many people have expressed the view that it is still a problem to access the store. Joan had a chance conversation, which has resulted in Battle Community Transport Service offering to explore the possibility to extend their weekly service to Sainsbury’s, alighting and boarding outside of the store to Broad Oak & Brede residents. The proposal is that it will run on Wednesdays and depart at midday returning two hours later. Bus passes will be valid. If there is sufficient response Battle Community Transport will be required to apply for an extension and this could take a couple of months. Saturday May 19 Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club have their 15th annual walk. It starts at Phillips & Stubbs office in Rye from 9 – 10 am in recent years there has been a good response from this village and they invite those who wish to enter either phone 07530772000 or email ryerotary@hotmail .co.uk All walkers will receive a completion certificate, awards will be made to – the team with the most sponsorship – Charity Shield. The family with the most sponsorship - The Family Walk Bowl. Trophies for Walkers with the most sponsorship. Up to 12 Years, 13 – 17years and over 18’s.

Monday May 20 Beavers and Cubs will have a joint meeting 5.30pm – 6.30pm this will be followed by Brede Scout Group AGM at 6.45 then a barbecue (lets hope they have good weather and a good turnout.)

A reminder that Charles McIndrick gave advance warning that a planned Neighbourhood Watch meeting is to take place on Saturday 1 June Local MP’s and representatives from Crime prevention have been invited. Coffee and tea will be available to purchase - arranged by Brede WI. Please put the date in your diary.
