Boxing clever at scout camp

Sausages, doughnuts, eggs and hot chocolate...who wouldn't love Scout camp?

The youngsters of 1st Ninfield Scout Group had everything they needed to made their Bank Holiday weekend camp a success '“ apart from sunny weather.

Leaders Jane Shoesmith and Sandra Creasey helped organise the event so that youngsters could raise funds at the weekend for a Shelter Box.

Jane commented: "This is part of our group's Homelessness project and International Partnership Award.

"Our aim is to raise approximately 500 to be able to purchase a Shelter-box from the Disaster Relief Charity to send out to Haiti or other areas in need around the world."

The Cubs and Scouts learned how to to build their own shelters using cardboard, waste material and anything useful they found in the wood at Kiteye in Freezeland Lane '“ with the ultimate aim of sleeping in them overnight.

The Beavers were also involved in the fundraising event.

Local businesses donated most of the food supplies to support the event so that every penny made went to the Shelterbox.

Ninfield Village Stores donated tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits, Jellybean Buses from Hooe gave bread, rolls and doughnuts, Alan and Sue Jury of Fraysland Farm, Carters Farm at Catsfield, Sainsbury's, and Matthews butcher's in Turkey Road supplied 80 sausages, Michael Brydon gave hot chocolate, Air Cooled Workshop in Ninfield supplied juice, disposable crockery, butter, Simply Real Sausages, Trattoria Restaurant for home-made soup, and Challenge Packaging from Uckfield, donated all the cardboard used to build seven shelters.

Jane added: "Despite the wind, rain and below average temperatures, spirits were high and the camp was a great success....the children haven't stopped talking about it."
