Bognor residents asked for views on proposals for former Lec site

Public comments are being invited about the latest plans for the former Lec site in Bognor Regis.

The chance for residents to give their views about the future of the important location has been offered by landowner Sime Darby London Ltd.

The company has devised a draft development brief to guide the future uses for the site alongside the A29.

As the Observer has reported, this concentrates on attracting retail units. In particular, a major supermarket chain could go there in head to head opposition with Tesco.

Residents with something to say about this should go to the www.simedarby.co.uk website to view the detailed plans and make comments.

They can also made to [email protected] or to Carolyne Haynes c/o Sime Darby London Ltd, 1st Floor, Widdowson House, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis PO22 9NG.

The closing date is June 14.

A spokeswoman for Sime Darby said: "Technical studies have shown the site will be expensive to develop and, consequently, there is an emphasis on high value mixed land uses which emphasise quality design, occupiers and employment opportunity."

The current proposals have arisen from an initial round of consultation by Sime Darby.

They produced three options '“ core, secondary and other land uses.

The core uses will generate jobs and include food and bulky goods retail units as well as research and development businesses.

The secondary uses are seen as storage and distribution, a business-type hotel and a car showroom and petrol filling station.

The other use is classified as residential and seen as a back-up if the preferred uses fail to generate enough money to develop a site contaminated with the waste of decades of fridge and freezer making.

Sime Darby will consider the response to these proposals when it compiles a final development brief for the ten acres of land. This document will be submitted for Arun District Council to approve.

Once that happens, it will enable developers to arrange for the site to be cleared and new occupiers to move in. Work could begin next year.
