Bill bikes to Scotland for charity

A MENCAP support worker from Horam is celebrating his retirement by cycling 1,000 miles from Land's End to John o' Groats.

Bill Dicker, 64, from Grange Close, is going on a two-and-a-half week biking trip on May 22 before he reaches his 65th birthday.

The idea is to raise money for Fegan's Child and Family Centre in Heathfield, where Bill's wife Mary works, and the New York-based I-Help Foundation which supports development projects in Uganda.

Bill, an ex-army man, said: 'I think some of the people at work think

I'm mad. My wife's a little worried. I do feel a bit apprehensive but I'm really looking forward to it.'

Armed with puncture repair kits, Bill plans to go off-road on his hybrid-tourer bike until he reaches Scotland. He will be staying with friends and at guest houses along the way.

A member of Hailsham Cycling Touring Club, he cycles at least 60 miles every week.

He is also a well-known action man at his local gym, and last year he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Kenya.

So far 1,000 has been pledged by family and friends but Bill hopes to double that figure.
