Bexhill fails latest beach test

It's one of only six of Sussex's 32 beaches not listed in the guide, which has been compiled by the Maritime Conservation Society (MCS).

To gain an MCS recommendation, water samples taken must meet European Community (EC) standards for levels of raw, screened or primary treated sewage.

It's more stringent than minimum EC requirements because 100 per cent of samples must pass.

Camber, Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne are the only beaches in the local area to have won places in the guide.

Only a fortnight ago Bexhill was awarded the blue and yellow Seaside Award flag by the Tidy Britain Award for the cleanliness and safety of the beach and quality of the sea water.

That followed widespread criticism of the beach in the Observer's news and letters pages after an Eastbourne hotelier said he was no longer recommending Bexhill to his guests.

Rother leader Graham Gubby: "I am amazed in light of the fact we have just been awarded the Tidy Britain Award yet again not just for the quality of water but for the cleanliness, safety and amenities of the whole beach.

"Just because we are not in this guide it does not mean to say our beach is not clean and safe. I know we have one of the best beaches and cleanest seas in the whole of England."

Rother environmental officer Tony Stevens explained the only beaches listed in the guide were the ones where water quality was above the mandatory European standard whereas Bexhill has been at the mandatory level for 10 years.
