Barnham schoolchildren's plea to save signal box

An SOS campaign has been launched by Barnham schoolchildren through the Observer.

The 45 pupils from the Year 6 class, aged about ten, have pleaded with Network Rail to 'Save Our Signalbox'.

They have called for the signalbox, built in 1911, at Barnham railway station to be kept once major rail improvement works are finished. Eden Brakhia (10) summed up their views when she stated: "Many people are against the destruction of the signalbox and are trying to save it.

"The signalbox is nearly 100 years old so it would be a pity to see it go.

"We would hate to see it disappear suddenly as there are very few Edwardian signal boxes left in the country.

"It still has many artefacts and can be a big attraction. It is one of the few historic buildings in Barnham."

The youngsters based their comments on a tour of the signalbox which is seen by thousands of railway passengers each day.

Network Rail spokesman Michael Kavanagh said talks about the future of the signalbox after the installation of modern signalling equipment in a few months' time were still continuing.

Work on the Barnham resignalling project carried on throughout last weekend, with improvements to track and platform also taking place to shut the rail network around the station for both days.
