Arundel bypass 'vital" for Sussex economy

BUSINESSES are desperate to see an Arundel bypass built, together with other improvements to the A27, a major survey has revealed.

More than two-thirds of companies taking part in Sussex Enterprise's annual Voice of Business survey were in favour of an A27 bypass around Arundel.

Better transport links across the county were seen as vital by the most of the 671 firms contributing to the study, the largest response since it began in 2003.

Mark Froud, chief executive at Sussex Enterprise, said: "Transport problems remain a big issue for local firms. The vast majority (81 per cent) of Sussex businesses believe there would be economic benefits to improving the east-west transport links in the area.

"Despite this overwhelming evidence, the government has ignored the views of business and continues to delay numerous schemes for improvements along the A27."

Toll tunnel

Findings from the survey showed 68 per cent of businesses in favour of an Arundel bypass, and 51 per cent calling for a toll tunnel around Worthing.

As well as seeking views on transport, the survey asked businesses about other important issues affecting them, including the economy, skills, red tape and crime.
