An Independent View: Pavements for pedestrians

There is a lot of discussion about traffic congestion, much of it ill- tempered and unhelpful - about bus lanes, cycle lanes, and thoughtless motorists.

Little serious attention, however, is given to pedestrians.

For those of us who are able- bodied, young and fit, the hustle and bustle of our city has a certain excitement as we rush along our way. We never really notice the obstacles that lie in wait for the frail, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

Brighton and Hove Independent is making a New Year's resolution: to speak out on behalf of citizens who choose to walk on pavements. And against those who thoughtlessly cycle - or park - on them.

As Graham Chainey makes clear in his brilliant column, our pavements are cluttered with all manner of obstructions and distractions - including countless tables and chairs essential to our "café culture". And even more essential to people who want nicotine with their caffeine.

Let's all try to make 2015 the year when pedestrians reclaim what is rightfully theirs: the pavements.
