A number of Cophall allotments which became unused, overgrown and untidy were recently cleared up by the town council and are now ready to receive new keepers.

Fourteen plots some large, some small have been freshly harrowed and fenced off, and can be planted on as soon as possible.

There are 33 other allotments on the site, which is next to the new Polegate Bypass roundabout.

'There's a thriving little community of allotment keepers down there,' said John Harmer, chairman of the Polegate Town Council allotments committee. 'The oldest is 90, who's still as active as ever.

'At the moment we've got a nice mixture of ages, with quite a few younger people, but we really want to get as much use out of this land as possible.'

Morgan Est, the developer of the Polegate Bypass, has constructed a new access road to the allotments. Cllr Harmer said that people access them by bike and car, but crossing the main road on foot can be risky but it is hoped a new traffic island will be provided in the middle of the road.

For more information about renting an allotment, contact Cllr Harmer via the town council offices in Polegate High Street.
