Two Battle Air Cadets have been selected to represent Sussex Wing for the prestigious Dacre Sword, awarded to the best male cadet and Dacre Brooch, awarded to the best female cadet in the country.

Cadet Warrant Officer Jordan Smith, aged 19, and Cadet Flight Sergeant Tasmin Paige, aged 18, from 88 (Battle) Squadron Air Training Corps will be heading up to London to attend interviews.

The Dacre Sword was the dress sword of former RAF Air Commodore G B Dacre and was presented by his wife to the Air Training Corps in 1979. The Dacre Brooch is the highest award any female Air Cadet can achieve. With the advent of girls in 1982, Mrs Dacre presented the Corps with a diamond brooch mounted on a sash, for presentation to the best female cadet.

It is one of the highest honours that an Air Cadet can achieve.

Both Cadet Warrant Officer Smith and Flight Sergeant Paige have extensive careers within the Air Training Corps, including being selected to attend various overseas camps as well as representing London and South East Region Air Training Corps at significant public events.

Flying Officer Maria Muggridge, Officer Commanding 88 (Battle) Squadron said: “To have one cadet nominated and selected to represent Sussex Wing is a great achievement, to have both the male and female representatives from the same Squadron is unprecedented.

“I am extremely proud of both of these cadets and wish them every success at their interviews to go on to represent London and South East Region in the next stage of the award.”
