Action hopes on level crossing delays

A PRIORITY list is being drawn up of railway level-crossings in West Sussex which cause the most safety concerns and have major traffic congestion.

Eight will be selected initially as being most in need of improvement, and they are expected to be announced during the next fortnight.

But it has already been indicated that Chichester's highly congested Stockbridge Road crossing will be on the list. The city crossing is often at the centre of lengthy traffic jams.

There have also been a number of accidents and other incidents there, some involving vehicles colliding with the gates or being struck by one of them, and in one case a pedestrian being hit by a descending barrier.

Road accident compensation claims have been made by the families of those who have been killed as a result of accidents at railways crossings in the county.
