A range of rhythms drum home the charity message

A 'Big Drum and Dance Bash' in aid of the Darfur & Chad appeal, hosted by local group Drumfire, was played out at Sidley Community Centre on Saturday.

Afternoon and evening performances and workshops were enjoyed by adults and children alike and included West African dance, samba, african drumming, limbo dancing, face painting, wholesome indian food and a natural flow fair trade table sale with nearly 200 being donated to the charity.

Drumfire member Julian Humphries called the day "really good, even though the weather was awful the people who came really enjoyed themselves and many stayed all day."

Based in the Bexhill and Hastings area, Drumfire are an African drum group from the UK and Gambia who have been performing traditional west african rhythms for the past five years in many south coast venus.

They also have weekly drum circles and workshops at Sidley and other locations in the area.

The group say that the art of drumming is a 'fun, energetic activity that has many benefits which include, stress relief, entertainment, creativity, improved confidence and self esteem, mental clarity and focus - all experiences that can be gained through rhythmical communion by drum circle participants.'

They teach drumming and dance to children of all ages at various schools in the East Sussex area but Julian said anyone of any age can learn and there is a Thursday evening drop-in workshop. For further information contact Cat Bray on 07950 690089 or email [email protected]
