Climping’s gardening gurus the cream of the crop

GREEN-FINGERED gardening gurus at a primary school in Climping are reaping all the rewards of months of hard work.

St Mary’s CE Primary School, in Brookpit Lane, has, for the first time, earned the prestigious gold award from South and South East In Bloom judges for its bumper crop of plants.

Pupils from across St Mary’s have been doing everything in their power to brighten up the school’s entrance and wildlife garden – which this year has a real eco-friendly theme to it.

Janet Llewelyn, head teacher, said: “We’re all thrilled. It’s been a great team effort. The children have really taken gardening and our school’s green ethos to heart.”

Youngsters certainly showed no reluctance in getting stuck in – come rain or shine.

On Tuesdays, during ‘golden time’, they would be out in the school’s own nature garden, tending to the crops.

Under the watchful gaze of reception teacher Gudrun Shanks and teaching assistant Lisa Mitchell, they grew everything from pumpkins, carrots, potatoes and sunflowers, to herbs, radishes and even strawberries.

“The children have enjoyed picking and eating the strawberries at lunch,” said Mrs Shanks.

They are still in the process of finishing an eco-friendly greenhouse made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.
