Hove Park School celebrates its GCSE results

This year, the average grade achieved by all students has improved, with the percentage of students achieving the EBACC increasing by 6 per cent – above the national average.

The head teacher at the Nevill Road school, Jim Roberts, said: “We are all incredibly proud of the students. Their hard work, determination and resilience is clearly evident from the results they have achieved.

“I would also like to thank the staff that have provided the quality of teaching, pastoral support and intervention that has enabled the students to progress and achieve at this level.

“We wish all our students every success as they begin the next stage of their education.”

There were many individual students who achieved outstanding results, including Saffron Collicott, Rose Howard, Freya Johnson, Amy Page and Peter Preston who all got a Grade 9 (the highest result) in English or English Literature.

Charlotte Bardsley, Tallula Crean, Archie Knight, Sara Marolt, Luca Oppes, Elsa Polo Laube, Peter Preston and Toby Virgo all got a Grade 9 in maths.

The government has set a pass in the new GCSEs as a Grade 4 or above and 62 per cent of Hove Park students achieved this in both English and maths, with student Peter Preston achieving a Grade 9 in both of these subjects.

Another area of strength for the school in Hove was the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc). To be successful, students need to pass GCSEs in English, maths, two sciences, a language and either history or geography.

This year 32 per cent of Hove Park students achieved the Ebacc, and this increase has been credited to the ‘strength of modern foreign language teaching’ in the school.

This year’s results improved in all the languages that Hove Park teaches – Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Italian – and there were also a number of students who achieved A*-C in other language GCSEs such as Arabic, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish.

Other subjects across the curriculum that saw improvement included computing, creative media, drama, English, history, music, and PE, while the students’ science results continue to be in-line with the national average.

The school has said it is also ‘extremely pleased’ to see an improvement in results for students that come under the pupil premium funding scheme.
