In Eastbourne’s Grove Road and South Street many independent traders have welcomed back customers after lockdown meant they could open up again after weeks of closure.

Steve Hansen at the Little Chelsea Antiques Emporium in Grove Road said, “With the new shop layout I can easily chat with customers whilst maintaining safe social distancing. I have installed a new counter with a large screen allowing me to converse with my customers,

“The most enjoyable part of the day is when someone brings in something for me to buy. Currently I’m mostly buying jewellery, and other gold and silver items, as these can go straight into my new sonic steriliser before appraisal. “Every item has a story behind it and it’s those stories that make the job so interesting. Buying and selling to or from the good people of Eastbourne is a privilege, and I endeavour always to be fair and honest, as nothing else will promote return business and allow many of my customers to become friends.”

Steve opened his shop seven years ago and his motto remains welcoming people to browse and relax, stop for a chat and a chin wag.

In neighbouring South Street florist Nicola Evans at beau-k has also introduced special social distancing measures but that a full range of flowers and plants are available.

She said, “Due to social distancing measures, we have had to make adjustments, but obviously people need to come into the shop and smell and get a feel for the flowers.

“We have everything in place to keep customers and staff safe.”

Nicola said that separate arrangements are being held for people who need to come in to discuss wedding flowers or funeral tributes to comply with government social distancing regulations.

As far as deliveries are concerned, Nicola said delivery drivers are operating a non-contact drop service.
