Lag Wood in Hassocks - future plans revealed

Hassocks Amenity Association began with a modest campaign to save a sequoia tree from being felled.

Nearly 45 years later, the association is such an integral part of community life that last year, residents pledged £90,000 in just eight days to try to save not just a tree but an entire wood.

Lag Wood on the southern outskirts of the village came up for auction at short notice. Despite a tremendous community effort, the wood went for more than anticipated but the new owner, Sue Milnthorp, who lives on the Sussex coast, is keen to preserve it for posterity.

Sue has plans to turn a field next to Lag Wood into a wildflower meadow again in order to encourage butterflies. She will be addressing the Hassocks Amenity Association AGM on Monday, June 10 at 7.30pm at Adastra Hall.
